French Institute in Poland Director's message
Since its establishment in 1924, the French Institute in Poland, operating under various names and with some breaks caused by historical disturbances, has had one and the same mission: to act for the benefit of the relations between Poland and France by teaching French and promoting cooperation between artists and intellectuals from the two countries.
In the 21st century, in free Poland and united Europe, this task is still as relevant as ever. The modern world shows us how important it is to learn about each other and look for solutions to the great challenges of our era: geopolitical, economic, social, technological, environmental. Culture, intellectual exchange as well as educational, linguistic, academic, and scientific cooperation, are crucial to this common aspiration.
This is the essence of the current development of the French Institute in Poland, which is a model French learning centre, a meeting place, a source of inspiration, as well as traditionally the partner of the largest Polish and French cultural institutions.
Books are especially important in its policy as the instrument for creating new ideas, ensuring the exchange of thought through translation and today also using new information and communication technologies through digital books.
Our media library provides access to the latest publications in the French market and disseminates digital materials through the portal Culturethèque. Our support programmes for publishing help publishers produce around 40 French titles in Polish a year. We support the exchange between operators of the book market by organizing regular meetings.
In this context, the French Institute in Poland and the French Embassy were happy to accept the invitation addressed to France to become the Guest of Honour of the 6th Warsaw Book Fair.
Owing to the support of our two strategic partners: Orange and Carrefour; acting in full collaboration with the International Bureau of French Publishers and many Polish publishers, and with the support of the French Institute in Paris, we will present the results of many years of exchange with the Polish book sector and present new prospects for future cooperation.
We would like to invite you to a real season of French culture: during and after the Book Fair there will be many other events, such as the French Film Festival and literary soirees in Teatr Polski.
I wish you a great month of May. Long live Franco-Polish friendship!
Director of the French Institute in Poland
