10:00–11:00 Adventures in Paradise

Join the Zakamarki publishing house for a literature-meets-art workshop for children, based on the book series “Adventures in Paradise”, written by Moni Nilsson and illustrated by Elin Lindell.

We will get to know the protagonists of the story, their families and residents of the Paradise housing estate, with troublesome older brothers, a friendly salesman, a lonely homeless man, an elderly immigrant woman and local hooligans.  During the workshop, we will make a model of the housing estate together. “Adventures in Paradise” is a new book series by Moni Nilsson about Tsatsiki, intended for beginning readers. With her inherent warmth and humour, but also seriousness and attentiveness to children's sensitivity, the author describes some usual and unusual events from the lives of two friends.

Workshop for children aged 7–10. Host: Beata Witoń (Zakamarki). At stand 103C, the participants in these meetings will have an opportunity to purchase books from the series at the price of 14 PLN

10:15–11:15 Calligraphy – an (un)forgotten art

During the one-hour workshop, we will discover the art of penmanship characteristic of the English handwriting.

The English script, today called “modern cursive”, has been valued for the writing speed and legibility. It was first used in commercial transactions. In its original form, cancellaresca, the English script became a popular writing model in the days of King John III Sobieski, who lived in the Wilanów Palace for over 20 years. In the English script, individual letters are thin and legible, despite their fancy shape.

The simplified version of the English script has been taught in schools until today, but after a few years of education, we develop our own handwriting style, often forgetting about the proper inclination of lettering, which, for the English script, should be at an angle of 55°, and failing to keep the ornamental character of letters, their oval shape, etc.

10:00–11:00 Jan Potocki as a translator of cultures

Jan Potocki was a remarkable traveller, researcher, and man of letters. At the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries, he travelled to almost every European country, visited Egypt and Morocco, as well as the Caucasus. He was fascinated by different traditions, mentalities, social organisations, and interested in people's behaviours, habits, prevailing norms, and languages. During his travels to exotic corners of the world, he observed the reality and meticulously noted his thoughts. Journals and letters of Count Potocki testify to the fact that studying the world through travels is a way to tame and understand it. In turn, written accounts of travels may become a metaphoric “dialogue” between representatives of other cultures and readers.

10:30–11:30 Proper names in the Carpathian Mountains – the multicultural heritage

Geographical names often seem incomprehensible. It is difficult to say what they “mean”, since they are often coined out of archaic linguistic elements that have fallen into disuse. We will discuss the etymological diversity, and sometimes exoticism of Carpathian toponyms in the context of languages, history and culture of the Beskids.

We will look at how particular ages of settling and development of the Carpathians translate into various layers of naming.

We will discuss various kinds of peculiar cartographic mistakes that make some of the toponyms seem illogical in the eyes of tourists. We will reflect on the following issues: are the Polish proper names in the Carpathians really Polish? Why is Siwakowska Dolina, a peak in the Beskids, called dolina (meaning valley)? Do you really need to cross the Atlantic to reach Manhattan? Does Pip Ivan, the third highest peak of the Chornohora range, have anything to do with an orthodox priest? How did a narthex end up in Chornohora woods.

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,

It was a need of my heart that led me to the Ural Mountains. This was an unusually beautiful and touching journey. I wanted to find the place of my Father’s exile. In January 1945, on the day of deportation, he was not even eighteen years old, and he was not my father yet. I wanted to find shaft number four, the hard coal mine, the labour camp where my Father had been exiled by the joint forces of NKVD and the Secret Political Office. The aim of my journey was Połowinka in the Central Ural Mountains...

It is my pleasure to invite you to my stand 4/H, where for the four days of the Warsaw Book Fair, I will be promoting my latest book, entitled ‘Połowinka. Rowerem na Ural, do miejsca zesłania Ojca. Wspomnienia Ojca, wspomnienia córki’ (Połowinka. A bicycle journey to the Ural Mountains, to the place of my Father’s exile. Father’s recollections, daughter’s recollections).

The aim of the event is to present the social context of Poland in the first years after the Second World War. Our starting point is 1944 and the complicated political situation of Poles under the Nazi occupation, living on the territories occupied by the Red Army and in exile.

The participants will learn about the political background of this period: the consequences of the Teheran and Yalta Conferences, the situation of the Government of the Republic of Poland in Exile, the course and consequences of Operation “Burza” ("Storm" or "Tempest"), the origin and operation of the anticommunist resistance organisation NIE (the first three letters of the word niepodległość, meaning "independence”; nie also means "no"), the Manifesto of the Polish Committee of National Liberation (PKWN) and creation of the Provisional Government of National Unity, the Trial of the Sixteen, the falsified parliamentary elections of 1947, the 1947 amnesty for the soldiers of the anti-communist underground, etc.

12:00–13:00 Intuition Pumps and Other Tools for Thinking

Today, we are increasingly experiencing an information overload, occurring when we have too much information to effectively make a decision or understand an issue.  Everyone who has ever tried to quickly get reliable information on a given issue has experienced it. The enormous amount of historical information to dig through, a rapidly increasing rate of new information being produced, contradictions and inaccuracies, separating the essence of the message from its background... The overload makes it difficult to determine whether the given information is relevant to a decision-making process or not. However, there are some ways of enhancing our critical thinking capacity and handling the big influx of information. They will be discussed during this lecture.

Traces of memory. 50 years of the Museum of the Pawiak Prison in Warsaw, promotion of a book about Pawiak, meeting with the author

The jubilee publication presents the history of the prison from its construction (according to a design by Henryk Marconi in 1837), through the revolution period of 1905–1907, the two decades of the interwar period, and the time of World War II.

It also describes the first forms of commemorating the victims among the rubble of the demolished prison, the construction of the Pawiak Prison Museum, permanent exhibitions, the Pawiak Tree Monument, as well as anniversaries and other celebratory events, such as the Pawiak Memorial Days or the Night of Museums.

Literary workshop. Prepared by Małgorzata Janina Berwid, creator of a weekly radio programme for children promoting reading on Radio Dla Ciebie, co-creator of popular TV programmes for children (CIUCHCIA, BUDZIK, author of the programme MOLIKI KSIĄŻKOWE).

Stage I – We recall Grimm’s Fairy Tales and create our own works. The first person starts telling a story, the next one adds two sentences, and this way everybody can take part in the storytelling. (Creative stimulation of imagination). Stage II – Anagram and palindrome word play based on the titles of Grimm’s Fairy Tales. Stage III – “Shockheaded Peter” (“Struwwelpeter”). Author: Heinrich Hoffmann, and Cornelia Funke with her books. Why do children misbehave? – we will look for an answer in books. Playing with text; a discussion. “Shockheaded Peter” may become the start of an important discussion with young readers about the role of literature, what constitutes the value of a book, the ways to raise children. It opens the way to many important questions, for which there will never be a definite answer. How will contemporary young readers react? Let’s see at the workshop. So what happened to Harriet, who kept playing with matches despite her mom’s warnings; to Augustus who would not have any soup; or to Conrad who sucked his thumbs...

Then, we will reflect on what the body means to people. We will also get to know more about the human body and create an amazing model reflecting its mysterious inside. Come and join us!

Family workshop for children (aged 5-10) and their parents.

Participation free of charge. The number of participants is limited. Further information available on PWN Facebook page.

Conducted by:

Kamil Niedziałek – a Polish musician, performer, visual artist, artistic educator, student at the Faculty of Media Art at the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts, graduate of Polish Philology and Cultural Studies from the University of Warsaw. He designs and conducts workshops for children and adults, at which artistic issues are most often treated as a pretext for a talk both on easy and difficult subjects. He has conducted para-theatrical and performance workshops in the Polish National Opera, Teatr Dramatyczny, Teatr Powszechny, and Teatr Ochoty. He is permanently associated with the Zachęta National Gallery of Art, as well as with Regeneracja, where he conducted a series of workshops that brought him the Słoneczniki Award in 2014. In 2016, he released his debut album under the pseudonym “Milito”.

12:00–13:00 Beyond the Baltic. On the culture of Finland.

Finland has a very rich culture and yet is little known in Poland. I would like to show its beauty by referring to the culture of everyday life, to Tove Jansson – best known as the author of the Moomin saga for children – and to Finnish art, which is becoming increasingly popular. The 50-minute meeting is an opportunity to embark on a journey to unknown lands and encourage young people to continue discovering Finland through literature.

13:00–14:00 And yet they DO read… A perverse talk on the suspicious reader.

The academic discourse has long ago killed literature and the author. (R. Barthes et all.). The academic discourse buried them and then, not without opposition, allowed for its glorious resurrection. The reader has proven to be least susceptible to all this mourning. While he has been reduced to a mere creation in the text, to a purely intratextual or model recipient, the fact that books were still disappearing from shelves has kept confirming the existence of the real one, against all odds. The reader has been cunningly slipping out of the hands of those who study abstract text constructs because studying him would require leaving the walls of the academy, reaching out to bookstores or libraries, and finally to homes, to learn about him and his intentions. What motivates him to read, what alibi can he offer for the frequent accusation of the crime of reading neglect.
Let us talk about those motivations, the alibi; let us paint a picture of the reader: both the expert reader and the non-professional one; let us reflect on the actual impact of campaigns promoting the reading habit, encouraging reading in general or reading more – do they irritate or encourage/discourage him or her? Let us make observations and self-observations on the reader.
