10:00–11:00 Adventures in Paradise

Join the Zakamarki publishing house for a literature-meets-art workshop for children, based on the book series “Adventures in Paradise”, written by Moni Nilsson and illustrated by Elin Lindell.

We will get to know the protagonists of the story, their families and residents of the Paradise housing estate, with troublesome older brothers, a friendly salesman, a lonely homeless man, an elderly immigrant woman and local hooligans.  During the workshop, we will make a model of the housing estate together. “Adventures in Paradise” is a new book series by Moni Nilsson about Tsatsiki, intended for beginning readers. With her inherent warmth and humour, but also seriousness and attentiveness to children's sensitivity, the author describes some usual and unusual events from the lives of two friends.

Workshop for children aged 7–10. Host: Beata Witoń (Zakamarki). At stand 103C, the participants in these meetings will have an opportunity to purchase books from the series at the price of 14 PLN

10:00–12:30 EduAction for libraries. Competencies and motivations of a modern librarian

We would like to invite all the literary enthusiasts, librarians, and teacher-librarians to the third conference organised by Warszawski Program Edukacji Kulturalnej as part of the EduAction. It has already become a tradition that it is held at the Warsaw Book Fair.

Registration: https://eduakcjadlabibliotek.evenea.pl/

Bearing in mind that cultural education is the sum of actions shaping the human capital, preparing us for conscious participation in culture and stimulating our aesthetic sensitivity, we would like to meet on 18 May with the intention of strengthening and improving our competencies.  A modern librarian plays the role of a consultant, teacher and co-creator of classes. In order to be up to his tasks and meet the expectations of both young and adult readers, he has to be a good time manager and, most importantly, be able to make library an interesting and valuable place.

The conference will cover a reflection on personal development, working with pupils on readings, as well as current issues of the professional milieu of teacher-librarians.

We are pleased to announce the participation of Maja Branka – a coach, consultant, tutor, and supervisor – having 16 years of experience, working both with groups (conducting trainings, workshops, sessions) and individuals. For the past four years she has been involved in a strong cooperation with cultural institutions – libraries and cultural centres, as well as with municipal officials responsible for the cultural policies. She specialises in workshops related to interpersonal and social communication.

At the conference, some time will also be devoted to the new application form of the Warsaw Cultural Education Award.

10:15–11:15 Calligraphy – an (un)forgotten art

During the one-hour workshop, we will discover the art of penmanship characteristic of the English handwriting.

The English script, today called “modern cursive”, has been valued for the writing speed and legibility. It was first used in commercial transactions. In its original form, cancellaresca, the English script became a popular writing model in the days of King John III Sobieski, who lived in the Wilanów Palace for over 20 years. In the English script, individual letters are thin and legible, despite their fancy shape.

The simplified version of the English script has been taught in schools until today, but after a few years of education, we develop our own handwriting style, often forgetting about the proper inclination of lettering, which, for the English script, should be at an angle of 55°, and failing to keep the ornamental character of letters, their oval shape, etc.

Literature Nobel laureate Herta Müller talks to Adam Krzeminski

Even before she received the Nobel Prize in 2009, more of Herta Müller’s novels had been translated into Polish than into any other language. At the time, however, the Poles still questioned who she really was, this woman from Berlin, who didn’t speak any language without an accent – was she German or Romanian? “The other country always clings to your shoes,” says Müller, who talks to Adam Krzeminski about origins and language, literature and politics, the past and the present.

14:30–15:30 Talking about books on the Web 2017 – continuation of a survey on reading habits of Internet users.

A continuation of the survey “Talking about books on the Web. A meeting space of readers” started in 2016, the results of which were presented last year at a conference on the occasion of the World Book and Copyright Day and at the Warsaw Book Fair. It is a joint research project of Lubimy Czytać, a Polish website for book lovers, and the Polish Chamber of Books. This year, having taken into account new, interesting factors, we once again tried to analyse the influence of using increasingly popular websites for book readers on reading habits. The new survey was conducted in April this year.

15:30–16:20 What does Thema serve as? Or who does Thema serve?

Amazon in Europe, the whole British book industry, half of the national German base, the entire export of Spanish publishers to South America – three to four years ago nobody would have thought that publishers in different countries would one day use a single global multilingual book subject classification.

And yet, one simple, common, and at the same time relatively detailed subject category scheme has been approved. Perhaps, it will long be a prevailing view in Poland that every publisher and retailer needs to create his own book subject classification system. Or maybe a breakthrough will happen?

We will discuss this matter with our guests. The meeting will be hosted by Renek Mendruń, who has been attending the meetings of the International Thema Steering Committee for a number of years on behalf of the National Library of Poland.
