12:00 A bargain: “Architektura VII dnia”

NOTE: The last copies of the first guidebook to the architecture of post-war Polish churches are reserved for the Warsaw Book Fair.

“Architektura VII dnia” (published by Bęc Zmiana/ Biuro Festiwalowe IMPART) presents more than 3000 Roman Catholic churches built in the Polish People’s Republic   – a period when erecting temples was a sign of both faith and protest against the atheist state. Constructed by public effort, with building materials very hard to acquire, the churches’ extraordinary shapes formed a breach in the rigid architectural landscape of the centralised country. Belonging to the grey area and therefore not entirely formalised, the construction of these temples attracted many talented architects by offering them creative freedom. Today, they constitute the most unique heritage of Polish 20th- century architecture.

This is the last chance to purchase the guidebooks – available at the stand of Bęc Zmiana (no. 4/D1).

13:00–14:00 André Stern

André Stern – “Zabawa. O uczeniu się, emocjach i życiu pełnym entuzjazmu”
André Stern is a guitarist, guitar maker, writer, lecturer, he speaks five languages and never went to school.

We invite everyone to a meeting where he will talk about the role of fun in learning, about the development of the emotional sphere and about searching for children’s natural potential. It will also be the first opportunity to discover the Polish translation of his latest book: “Zabawa. O uczeniu się, zaufaniu i życiu pełnym entuzjazmu”.

What is the first thing children do when they are left in peace? They have fun. We know this, we don’t even have to think about the answer.

And if we were to let the child do it, it would... keep having fun forever!

So why do we keep bothering children when they are having fun?
– André Stern

Playing is the most successful tool for learning nature has given us. André Stern will talk about the incredible power of unhindered fun, curiosity and developing one’s passions. His message is based on the experience of his father Arno, who has been constantly working with children for more than sixty years now, as well as André Stern’s personal experience of his childhood without school, which allowed him to learn skills from reading, writing and counting, through fluency in five languages, programming skills and astronomy, to professional instrument play, composing music, and even guitar making.

At the meeting, Stern will share his observations on playing as the best way to learn about oneself and the surrounding world – and he’ll show that it allows children to learn very effectively.

André Stern (born in Paris in 1971) never went to school; he is one of the characters of Erwin Wagenhofer’s film documentary “Alphabet” of 2013. The son of Arno Stern, a pedagogue and researcher whose work focuses on the spontaneous disposition of the human being.

He is also the author of two bestselling books, in which he describes the experience of a life without school, published in Poland as “…I nigdy nie chodziłem do szkoły” (Wydawnictwo Element, 2016) and “Mój ojciec, mój przyjaciel” (Wydawnictwo Element, 2016).
