10:00–12:00 Writing is challenging – workshop by Maszyna do Pisania with Sylwia Chutnik

First comes the fear: is my story interesting enough? Would anyone want to read it? When you decide to write it down, there comes the paralysis: what to start with. A blank page in front of you, panic in your head. Take it easy, this is just writing! Not only can we draw strength from it, but we can also enjoy the creative process itself! Together, we will try to awaken a literary spirit inside us and let it get caught up in the whirl of writing.

This two-hour workshop will be devoted to the creation of texts, their form and stages of the writing process.

Limited number of places, please sign up at: maszyna@maszynadopisania.pl, with an annotation: Warszawskie Targi Książki (Warsaw Book Fair).

Participants will be accepted in the order of registration.

12:00 Premiere of the book “Śmieciowy Kapitalizm”

Watch out for the spring highlights of the publishing house Bęc Zmiana! “Śmieciowa przestrzeń” (co-published with Centrum Architektury) is a selection of texts by Rem Koolhaas from the 1970s until now. It contains his watershed essays on architecture, such as Bigness, The Generic City and Junkspace, after which the book is titled, as well as transcripts of lectures and an interview with the author. Koolhaas is not afraid to ask frank questions about the place of architecture in our globalised reality, about the world – subjected to express urbanisation and saturated with images. Another author who does not shy away from controversial theses is Kacper Pobłocki, author of the book “Kapitalizm. Historia krótkiego trwania”, a tale of how work, space and money have become the pillars of the system that is now becoming history. This epoch-making event provides the author with an opportunity to once again pose a series of fundamental questions. Did the West invent or only appropriate modernity, democracy, urbanity? Is capitalism as old as mankind? At what time did people who inhabited the territory of present-day Poland enter the current of global affairs? The premiere of the two books will take place at the Warsaw Book Fair at the stand of Bęc Zmiany (no. 4/D1).

12:00–13:00 Beyond the Baltic. On the culture of Finland.

Finland has a very rich culture and yet is little known in Poland. I would like to show its beauty by referring to the culture of everyday life, to Tove Jansson – best known as the author of the Moomin saga for children – and to Finnish art, which is becoming increasingly popular. The 50-minute meeting is an opportunity to embark on a journey to unknown lands and encourage young people to continue discovering Finland through literature.

12:00–13:00 The authors of the monograph “FARAON”. POETYKA FILMU will be signing the book at the publisher’s stand

Seweryn Kuśmierczyk (the scientific editor), Robert Birkholc, Agnieszka Korycka, Michał Mróz, Jacek Pająk, Paweł Stroiński.

The monograph provides a comprehensive overview of the movie FARAON by Jerzy Kawalerowicz, one of the masterpieces of Polish cinematography. The analytical chapters have been devoted to set design and props (taking into account the period of preparations), direction and acting, the art of camera operation, the aspects of editing and montage, the shaping of the sonoristic layer, analysis of the music in the movie.

The monograph format broadens the timeframe of the analysis. A detailed examination of the elements of poetics of the movie, its structure and composition, also including the execution and technical issues, has been complemented with a discussion devoted to the film adaptation of Bolesław Prus’ novel, analysing the initial novelized prose screenplays, the subsequent versions of the script and the shooting script while at the same time comparing them to the original book. Separate chapters are devoted to the reception of the film in Poland and abroad, the differences between the two director’s cuts as well as issues related to the digital reconstruction of the film. The chapters complement each other owing to the shared methodology – anthropological/morphological analysis.

The monograph is based on numerous archival materials and almost priceless insider knowledge gathered by the authors during talks held with representatives of various professions who were responsible for the movie.

13:00–14:00 And yet they DO read… A perverse talk on the suspicious reader.

The academic discourse has long ago killed literature and the author. (R. Barthes et all.). The academic discourse buried them and then, not without opposition, allowed for its glorious resurrection. The reader has proven to be least susceptible to all this mourning. While he has been reduced to a mere creation in the text, to a purely intratextual or model recipient, the fact that books were still disappearing from shelves has kept confirming the existence of the real one, against all odds. The reader has been cunningly slipping out of the hands of those who study abstract text constructs because studying him would require leaving the walls of the academy, reaching out to bookstores or libraries, and finally to homes, to learn about him and his intentions. What motivates him to read, what alibi can he offer for the frequent accusation of the crime of reading neglect.
Let us talk about those motivations, the alibi; let us paint a picture of the reader: both the expert reader and the non-professional one; let us reflect on the actual impact of campaigns promoting the reading habit, encouraging reading in general or reading more – do they irritate or encourage/discourage him or her? Let us make observations and self-observations on the reader.

14:00–15:00 dr hab. Peter Oliver Loew

Presentation of the Polish translation of Peter Oliver Loew’s book “Wir Deutschen. Geschichte der Polen in Deutschland” (München: C.H. Beck 2014). The interview with the author will be conducted by the Director of the German Historical Institute (NIH), Professor Miloš Řezník.

The author presents the history of Poles in Germany, discussing Polish immigration and the historical Polish minorities in Germany, from the Middle Ages to the present. Today the Polish community – the second largest minority group in Germany – is highly diverse. It includes displaced people who no longer acknowledge any Polish identity but speak Polish at home, often the Silesian dialect. There are those who want to integrate with the German society as quickly as possible and those who try to remain Polish. There are people who emigrated for economic or political reasons – some of them have Polish citizenship and some have German citizenship. Furthermore, every year Germany hosts hundreds of thousands of Polish seasonal workers. At the same time, Germany is inhabited by the descendants of those who ended up there because of World War II and even of economic migrants from the pre-war period.

Participants of the meeting: Jacek Raczek, a missionary. Dariusz Gaczyński, César Rosales-Miranda.

A quarter of a century has passed since the death of the first Polish martyr missionaries: the Blessed Michał Tomaszek and the Blessed Zbigniew Strzałkowski. During that time, many biographies have been written about them. But so far they were usually authored either by other members of the Franciscan order or by completely unrelated people. This book is the first biography written by someone closely related to one of them, namely with the Blessed Michał Tomaszek – his nephew, Jacek Raczek… The undeniable value of the publication is proven by the fact that it was not written ‘on bended knees’, and although the author is related to the protagonist by blood, he does not whitewash anything in his past. He does not cover anything up, does not omit unfavourable facts, does not justify his uncle’s choices and he does not pretend there’s heroism where there is none. He simply attempts to provide an objective account of the Blessed Michal Tomaszek’s life.

14:00–15:30 Quo Vadis, Europa?

A panel discussion with Juri Andruchowytsch, Ulrike Guérot and Magdalena Grochowska
Chair: Jacek Żakowski

The EU is in a deep crisis, yet it remains a place of aspiration for many people. It is a pressing contemporary task to resolve this paradox and rethink Europe as a place fit for the future. A tough call, but essential if we are to avoid nationalism and war. Three authors from three countries discuss their views of the current state, as well as the future of this shared continent.

15:00–16:00 Hege Storhaug

Premiere of the Polish edition of the book “Islam – den ellevte landeplage” (Islam, the 11th plague) by Hege Storhaug, a Norwegian feminist and human rights activist. The lecture and debate will be moderated by Piotr Ibrahim Kalwas, a Muslim. The book was published in Norway in 2015 and immediately became a bestseller. By now, 5 editions of this book have been published, with 100,000 copies in total. This book is a controversial, difficult and shocking testimony to the threats to Europe posed by radical Islam. The text is full of challenges, especially for those who profess the idea of multicultural coexistence, dialogue and tolerance. It faces the readers with facts, statistical data and quotes that might be difficult to accept and which have been collected over the years of work for the Human Rights Service – an organisation dedicated to helping children and women from Muslim families, among others. Hege Storhaug is an activist known especially in leftist circles, but still she has written a book that obviously rejects leftist ideals. She is very popular in Scandinavian countries, and after the publication of this book the interest in her increased even further, especially because of the massive wave of criticism she was faced with.

17:30 The city is a never ending story – a meeting with Gabriel Leonard Kamiński – a poet, journalist, bookseller and publisher. Hosts: Magdalena Stachniak-Koperska, Wydawnictwo ANAGRAM

From the moment when Gabriel L. Kamiński published his book “Ulica Przodowników Pracy” (MAW 1987), a lyrical tale about the life and inhabitants of Wrocław’s Grabiszynek quarter, he has been carefully following the narration of his city. His latest work on Wrocław and his life in the city is a volume of poetic prose titled “Jestem, ocalałem” (I am, I have survived), where he attempts to finally appraise his life in Wrocław as well as the entire generation ‘57’.

Olaf Kühl and Paweł Dunin-Wąsowicz in conversation, with a musical ending

"German-ness” in Polish literature, and Polish elements in German literature; reciprocal inspirations; the vital attraction each city exerts on the artists and hedonists of its respective neighbour: these are the themes for two people who have been intimately involved in this long and exciting affair: publisher and author, Paweł Dunin-Wąsowicz (Warsaw), and writer, Olaf Kühl (Berlin), who has translated works by the promising young writer Dorota Masłowska, discovered by Dunin-Wąsowicz.

Arcadia or inferno; Utopia or dystopia; houses from which we flee, and to which we return: just some of the “places” that have found resonance in literature. In this Long Night of Literature, German and Polish writers will tell us of their own places – about the living spaces and houses they’ve had to flee, and to which they returned in order to write.

Organizer: Germany – Guest of Honour, Goethe-Institut
Place: Library, Goethe-Institut, Chmielna 13a, Warszawa
