10:00–11:00 Jan Potocki as a translator of cultures

Jan Potocki was a remarkable traveller, researcher, and man of letters. At the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries, he travelled to almost every European country, visited Egypt and Morocco, as well as the Caucasus. He was fascinated by different traditions, mentalities, social organisations, and interested in people's behaviours, habits, prevailing norms, and languages. During his travels to exotic corners of the world, he observed the reality and meticulously noted his thoughts. Journals and letters of Count Potocki testify to the fact that studying the world through travels is a way to tame and understand it. In turn, written accounts of travels may become a metaphoric “dialogue” between representatives of other cultures and readers.

10:30–11:30 Proper names in the Carpathian Mountains – the multicultural heritage

Geographical names often seem incomprehensible. It is difficult to say what they “mean”, since they are often coined out of archaic linguistic elements that have fallen into disuse. We will discuss the etymological diversity, and sometimes exoticism of Carpathian toponyms in the context of languages, history and culture of the Beskids.

We will look at how particular ages of settling and development of the Carpathians translate into various layers of naming.

We will discuss various kinds of peculiar cartographic mistakes that make some of the toponyms seem illogical in the eyes of tourists. We will reflect on the following issues: are the Polish proper names in the Carpathians really Polish? Why is Siwakowska Dolina, a peak in the Beskids, called dolina (meaning valley)? Do you really need to cross the Atlantic to reach Manhattan? Does Pip Ivan, the third highest peak of the Chornohora range, have anything to do with an orthodox priest? How did a narthex end up in Chornohora woods.

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,

It was a need of my heart that led me to the Ural Mountains. This was an unusually beautiful and touching journey. I wanted to find the place of my Father’s exile. In January 1945, on the day of deportation, he was not even eighteen years old, and he was not my father yet. I wanted to find shaft number four, the hard coal mine, the labour camp where my Father had been exiled by the joint forces of NKVD and the Secret Political Office. The aim of my journey was Połowinka in the Central Ural Mountains...

It is my pleasure to invite you to my stand 4/H, where for the four days of the Warsaw Book Fair, I will be promoting my latest book, entitled ‘Połowinka. Rowerem na Ural, do miejsca zesłania Ojca. Wspomnienia Ojca, wspomnienia córki’ (Połowinka. A bicycle journey to the Ural Mountains, to the place of my Father’s exile. Father’s recollections, daughter’s recollections).

The big return of the famous “Theory of Seeing”, a collection of art history lectures given by Strzemiński in the 1950s, published by the Łódź Art Museum.

“Theory of Seeing” is an outcome of Strzemiński’s years-long contemplation and an amazing testimony to the theoretical consciousness of the artist, who has permanently influenced the development of visual arts. The collection shows how to look at changes in artistic perception in a broader time context and illustrates the interdependencies between the evolution of society and changes occurring in art and literature, combining art education and art history.

12:00–13:00 Intuition Pumps and Other Tools for Thinking

Today, we are increasingly experiencing an information overload, occurring when we have too much information to effectively make a decision or understand an issue.  Everyone who has ever tried to quickly get reliable information on a given issue has experienced it. The enormous amount of historical information to dig through, a rapidly increasing rate of new information being produced, contradictions and inaccuracies, separating the essence of the message from its background... The overload makes it difficult to determine whether the given information is relevant to a decision-making process or not. However, there are some ways of enhancing our critical thinking capacity and handling the big influx of information. They will be discussed during this lecture.

Children as recipients (addressees), often involuntary; the role of literature and reading; the role of family and environment; the threats of modern technology (computers, tablets, smartphones), and the increasingly frequent phenomenon of children taking part in various productions: advertisement, TV series, TV programmes or theatre plays.

The first debate took place during the 16th Poznan Trade Fair Meetings on books for children. This time, the PTWK invites to the second debate. Join us on a panel discussion with eminent experts and authorities in different areas:

Professor Joanna Papuzińska (University of Warsaw), Professor Edyta Gruszczyk-Kolczyńska (Maria Grzegorzewska University in Warsaw), Irena Koźmińska (President of the ABCXXI Foundation – Cała Polska Czyta Dzieciom), Bogusława Sochańska (President of the Danish Cultural Institute and an esteemed translator), Ewa Gruda (managing the unique Childrens’ Books Museum in Warsaw).

The meeting will be moderated by Olcha Sikorska, the Vice-President of PTWK, the founder and manager of sixteen editions of Poznan Trade Fair Meetings.

13:00–14:00 Further than the Baltic Sea. On the culture of Finland.

Finland is a very rich country in terms of culture and yet Poles don't know much about it. I would like to show its beauty by referring to the culture of everyday life, to Tove Jansson – best known as the author of the Moomin saga for children – and to Finnish art, which is becoming increasingly popular. The 50-minute meeting is an opportunity to embark on a journey to unknown lands and encourage young people to continue discovering Finland through literature.

13:00–14:00 Intuition Pumps and Other Tools for Thinking

14:30–15:30 Give me a chance

Literary workshop. Prepared by Małgorzata Janina Berwid, creator of a weekly radio programme for children promoting reading on Radio Dla Ciebie, co-creator of popular TV programmes for children (CIUCHCIA, BUDZIK, author of the programme MOLIKI KSIĄŻKOWE).

Stage I – We recall Grimm’s Fairy Tales and create our own works. The first person starts telling a story, the next one adds two sentences, and this way everybody can take part in the storytelling. (Creative stimulation of imagination). Stage II – Anagram and palindrome word play based on the titles of Grimm’s Fairy Tales. Stage III – “Shockheaded Peter” (“Struwwelpeter”). Author: Heinrich Hoffmann, and Cornelia Funke with her books. Why do children misbehave? – we will look for an answer in books. Playing with text; a discussion. “Shockheaded Peter” may become the start of an important discussion with young readers about the role of literature, what constitutes the value of a book, the ways to raise children. It opens the way to many important questions, for which there will never be a definite answer. How will contemporary young readers react? Let’s see at the workshop. So what happened to Harriet, who kept playing with matches despite her mom’s warnings; to Augustus who would not have any soup; or to Conrad who sucked his thumbs...

19:00–21:00 Poetry slam, inauguration of the literary criticism magazine “Mały Format”

The first issue of “Mały Format” will be published on 12 May, and the  creators of this new monthly would like to invite everyone to an  inauguration event – a poetry slam, to be held on 19 May.

A slam is a competition between poets. The winner is determined by popular vote. We are inviting the audience and the artists who would like to perform onstage (the artists are kindly asked for contact via email: kontakt@malyformat.com or Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/malyformat).

Not only the occasion is special but the venue as well – Klubojadalnia Eufemia, an iconic club in Warsaw, which will be closing down towards the end of May. All the more reason to bid it farewell in grand style.
