10:00–18:00 "Follow the cat" – an exhibition of illustration for children books

The exhibition "Follow the cat" is a collection of 25 illustrations by Romanian cartoonists associated in the Romanian Illustrators Club.

Artists:  Zelmira Szabo, Cristiana Radu, Adela Calistru, Alina Marinescu, Anca Smarandache, Andra Badea, Cristinas Crișu, Raluca Burcă, Corina Drăgan, Delia Zahareanu, Emanuela Balint, Gabriela Fabian, Georgiana Chițac, Irina Dobrescu, Iulia Ignat, Margareta Udrescu, Gabriela Soare, Mihaela Paraschivu, Raluca Anghel, Stela Lie, Oana Ispir, Bogdan Topîrceanu.

Since its beginning in 2005, the Club's vocation has been to make the impossible possible, clothing the world in shapes and colors according to the artists’ own imagination.

In the beginning there were ten: a few students, a few graduates and their lecturer in graphic art from the State University of Art in Bucharest, Stela Lie. They worked more during the workshops than during classes, as book illustration is not a class subject in any of the Romanian universities. Today there are fifty of them.

13:00–14:00 Virtual booksellers, automatic reviewers – can artificial intelligence be the way to increase readership?

A team of machine learning and AI experts developed algorithms that "read" books and are able to combine their contents with plot feature, something which only humans could grasp until now – what effects a book would have on its readers, whether it would entertain, sadden, move, or frighten them. The system, which makes it easier for readers to select a book from thousands of available titles, has already been tested.

The results of joint efforts of a tech start-up, the Polish Book Institute, and Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University in Warsaw (UKSW) will be presented publicly for the first time at the Warsaw Book Fair. In addition, the research team will reveal the title of the first novel evaluated by the Polish AI solution.

Speakers: Krzysztof Sopyła, PhD – machine learning expert, Elżbieta Sobczak, PhD – director of UKSW publishing house, Urszula Witkowska – book sales and marketing practitioner.

A fabulous nature flourishes in the heart of Europe: mountains stretching along the horizon, ancient forests and endlessly flowing meadows that are home to various species of animals and plants typical of the Old Continent. It is a land of beauty and unrestrained nature, whose fate depends on the seasons. Creatures that we know from legends and fairy tales live here in the wild and fight for survival. 15:00–16:00 Movie screening: the noir-policier shorts trilogy Bad Penny, Kowalski and Ramona, directed by Andrei Crețulescu (56 min.)

Andrei Creţulescu’s trilogy (Bad Penny, Kowalski and Ramon) combines humor, violence and fantasy in a cinema that is stylized, postmodern and unusual from a formal point of view. Shorts shot with the same crew and cast: trio Andi Vasluianu, Şerban Pavlu, Dorian Boguţă and Rodica Lazăr and Ana Ularu, one of the most talented actors of the young generation.

Bad Penny: One night, just before the holidays, in an empty park, two small-time thugs hold up a strange looking man. Kowalski: Three men go into a pub. The first man has too many questions, the second man has the perfect plan and the third man has no chance. Ramona: One girl. One car. One night. No coincidence. Awarded by the International Critics' Week in Cannes (2015) and at the Chicago Shorts festival.

Dialogue is the strong side of Creţulescu's work. A lively and unique noir & pulp cinema with dialogues that are fleshy and intelligent. The strong words are not only characteristic for the characters, they are a mark of their brutality, ruthlessness, physical violence and selfishness. A world in which the curse is above all a confirmation of self-esteem.

16:00–18:00 "We cannot escape our past" – meeting with the historian Adrian Cioroianu

Meeting about the book with the same title (Amaltea 2019). Meeting led by dr hab. Błażej Brzostek. An event dedicated to the students and lecturers of the University of Warsaw.

Adrian Cioroianu, currently Ambassador of Romania to UNESCO in Paris, is one of the most eminent Romanian historians and politicians: former dean of the Faculty of History at the University of Bucharest, senator, member of the European Parliament, and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Romania between 2007-2008.

The book is a brief tale about the most important events, problems and figures of Romanian history (from the second world war to the overthrow of communism in 1989), allowing the readers to understand Romania's history. For a Polish reader who usually does not know much about the history of his pre-war neighbor, this story will be a fascinating discovery.

The exhibition Follow the cat is a collection of 25 illustrations by Romanian cartoonists associated in the Romanian Illustrators Club.

In the beginning there were ten: a few students, a few graduates and their lecturer in graphic art from the State University of Art in Bucharest, Stela Lie. They worked more during the workshops than during classes, as book illustration is not a class subject in any of the Romanian universities. Today there are fifty of them.

15:30–16:30 Movie screening: the noir-policier shorts trilogy "Bad Penny", "Kowalski" and "Ramona", directed by Andrei Crețulescu (56 min.)

Andrei Creţulescu’s trilogy combines humor, violence and fantasy in a cinema that is stylized, postmodern and unusual from a formal point of view. Shorts shot with the same crew and cast: trio Andi Vasluianu, Şerban Pavlu, Dorian Boguţă and Rodica Lazăr and Ana Ularu, one of the most talented actors of the young generation.

"Bad Penny": One night, just before the holidays, in an empty park, two small-time thugs hold up a strange looking man. "Kowalski": Three men go into a pub. The first man has too many questions, the second man has the perfect plan and the third man has no chance. "Ramona": One girl. One car.

The first "Memoirs" of Ionesco, published by Agora Publishing House, will be discussed by Adam Michnik, editor-in-chief of "Gazeta Wyborcza", and theater critic Janusz Majcherek.
"Present Past Past Present "is the most intimate text of the great playwright, showing unexpected shades in his biography and, at the same time, a record of his thoughts on remembrance, fate, politics and history. Eugène Ionesco (Eugen Ionescu, 1909-1994), co-founder of the Theater of the Absurd, author of "The Lessons" and "Rhinoceros", makes an autobiographical confession about his childhood, his key choices during the Second World War and his post-war life in Paris, center of the political and cultural debates of the second half of the twentieth century. Part of the great literature, this book is one of the most important intellectual testimonies of the last century.

The exhibition Follow the cat is a collection of 25 illustrations by Romanian cartoonists associated in the Romanian Illustrators Club.

13:00–14:30 Can we escape history? – Bogumił Luft (translator of the book and former Polish Ambassador to Romania) talks to the historian and writer Adrian Cioroianu.

The talk will focus on the launching of the book "We cannot escape our past" (Amaltea 2019, translated by Bogumił Luft) about the events in Romania after WWII, the era of communism and its overthrown in 1989. This is a continuation of the book "Beautiful Stories of the History of Romanians" (Amaltea 2018, translated by Bogumił Luft), covering the period from the beginnings of Romanian statehood, in the 19th century, to the 20th century. These books bring the Romanian experience closer to the Polish reader, drawing the attention on their own history and of other nations’ in our region of Europe.

Adrian Cioroianu is professor of history, writer and politician, currently the Romanian ambassador to UNESCO. Thanks to the television series "Five Minutes of History", largely appreciated by the audience, in which he presented the most important figures and events from the country's history in a short and captivating way, Adrian Cioroianu enjoys a large popularity among his countrymen.

13:00–14:30 Screening of the movie "Unseen Romania" (documentary, 90 min.)

The film takes the viewer on a journey that begins on the forested slopes of the Carpathians – where bears, wolves and lynx live in the wilderness and ends to the windswept waters of the Danube Delta – with water snakes in the depths and pelicans that are rising in the sky. And "Unseen Romania" reveals all these unbelievable stories to us.

14:30–17:00 Romanian animated cartoons

Mihaela, cartoon by Nell Cobar, Romania 1969; Miaunel and Bălănel, cartoon by Horia Ștefănescu, Zaharia Buzea, Artin Badea, Romania 1974

The main character is a little girl, Mihaela. With blonde ribboned pigtails, Mihaela goes through a lot of incidents, many of them caused by her little dog, Azorel, who only wants to play with her.

Bălănel, the dog, and Miaunel, the cat, ignore the conflict that defines the relationship between their worlds since the dawn of times. Both of them are equally bewildered  when facing greed, lie and unjustice. Charming in their naivity, all they want is harmony, fairness and equity.

15:00–16:00 Movie screening: the noir-policier shorts trilogy "Bad Penny", "Kowalski" and "Ramona", directed by Andrei Crețulescu (56 min.)

One car.

16:30–18:00 Screening of the movie "Unseen Romania" (documentary, 90 min.)

The film takes the viewer on a journey that begins on the forested slopes of the Carpathians – where bears, wolves and lynx live in the wilderness and ends to the windswept waters of the Danube Delta – with water snakes in the depths and pelicans that are rising in the sky. And "Unseen Romania" reveals all these unbelievable stories to us.

18:00–19:00 Movie screening: the noir-policier shorts trilogy "Bad Penny", "Kowalski" and "Ramona", directed by Andrei Crețulescu (56 min.)

One car.

10:00–17:00 "Follow the cat" – an exhibition of illustration for children books

The exhibition Follow the cat is a collection of 25 illustrations by Romanian cartoonists associated in the Romanian Illustrators Club.

Jacek Hugo-Bader – reporter of Gazeta Wyborcza. He adores Russia and the former Soviet countries, where he spent almost four years in total. He crossed all of Central Asia, the Gobi Desert, China, Tibet, the Pamir Mountains by bike and Lake Baikal by canoe. In the winter of 2007, he traveled alone from Moscow to Vladivostok, and his book "White Fever: A Journey to the Frozen Heart of Siberia" is an account of his months-long ramble in a Russian rover. In 2011, his "Kolyma Diaries: A Journey into Russia's Haunted Hinterland" was published, the fruit of a lonely hitchhiking trip to Kolyma. He is also the author of the books "Długi film o miłości. 11:00–12:30 Screening of the movie "Unseen Romania" (documentary, 90 min.)

The film takes the viewer on a journey that begins on the forested slopes of the Carpathians – where bears, wolves and lynx live in the wilderness and ends to the windswept waters of the Danube Delta – with water snakes in the depths and pelicans that are rising in the sky. And "Unseen Romania" reveals all these unbelievable stories to us.

12:00–12:55 "Miaunel and Bălănel", cartoon by Horia Ștefănescu, Zaharia Buzea, Artin Badea, Romania 1974

Bălănel, the dog, and Miaunel, the cat, ignore the conflict that defines the relationship between their worlds since the dawn of times. Both of them are equally bewildered  when facing greed, lie and unjustice. Charming in their naivity, all they want is harmony, fairness and equity.

13:00–14:00 Movie screening: the noir-policier shorts trilogy "Bad Penny", "Kowalski" and "Ramona", directed by Andrei Crețulescu (56 min.)

One car.

14:00–15:30 "The book of the cat' – meeting with the writer Cristian Teodorescu

We invite you to a meeting with the award-winning Romanian writer Cristian Teodorescu and the translator Radosław Janowska-Lascar. The discussions will be led by Marcin Wilk

Cristian Teodorescu, the author of Medgidia (Amaltea 2016, translated by Radosława Janowska-Lascar), is famous for his colorful way of telling stories. He constructs his heroes with warmth and tenderness, and his books are seasoned with a large dose of humor and a pinch of irony.

The discussions will focus on this year's Polish launching of "The book of the cat" (Amaltea 2019, translated by Radosława Janowska-Lascar). The narrator of the novel is a one-eyed cat, taken in by the writer. The cat's look at the world, though limited as a result of an accident, becomes a pretext to consider family, friendship and the modern world relationships. A book not only for lovers of meowing pets!

The author's previous book, Medgidia qualified for the finals of the ANGELUS Central European Literary Award in 2016.
