Presidents of Federal Republic of Germany and Poland at the WBF

Today the Warsaw Book Fair was a witness of a significant event – a visit of two presidents: the President of Federal Republic of Germany Frank-Walter Steinmeier and the President of Poland Andrzej Duda. They officially inaugurated together the stand of Germany – the Guest of Honour of the Fair’s current edition.

- I am glad that the first visit in Poland the newly elected President of Federal Republic of Germany takes place the moment we have the 8th Warsaw Book Fair. We are here, where the German and Polish literature encounter. We all know, that book is a crucial factor, essential in building bonds between societies, between people – said Polish president Andrzej Duda.

- I am glad to be here with You, on this great book fair – began his speech directed to the mass media and the reading public of the WBF president Frank-Walter Steinmeier. Then he quoted the words of Karl Dedecius, a great translator of the Polish literature into German, who said: „the literature is a window and the windows should be opened. Otherwise the windows will be blank and people mute”. He also refered to works of many Polish writers like Czesław Miłosz, Andrzej Szczypiorski, Wisława Szymborska, Olga Tokarczuk and Andrzej Stasiuk. He summarized: - Due to the literature we meet each other, because it opens a dialogue between us.

After these short speeches presidents officially opened the German stand and then greeted with the representatives of publishers. They visited the German writer Charlotte Link, who signed her books in the Sonia Draga stand. After that they went to the publisher Dwie Siostry – whose book „Maps” of Aleksandra and Daniel Mizielińscy was one of the most attractive Polish export goods over the recent years, also for German readers.
