The 1st day of WBF
The Warsaw Book Fair is a wonderful feast for book lovers and book creators. This very moment I would like to welcome the Guest of Honour of the current Warsaw Book Fair – Germany. Literature and culture of this country is very interesting for Polish people – claimed during the opening ceremony Magdalena Gawin – Deputy Minister of Culture and National Heritage. She emphasized the rich offer of national and foreign publishers, which is always presented on WBF. Thanks to this fact readers can follow the most important trends on the publishing market. She also assured that support of the book trade and readership was one of the priorities of the Ministry of Culture. The Ministry influences on many fields of a book trade: supporting the bookselling, promotion of the readership and valuable literature, which has a serious problem with an occurence on the open market.
The Ambassador of The Federal Republic of Germany Rolf Nikel assured about participation and commitment of his country in the Warsaw Book Fair. He pointed that the motto of German presentation – „Worte bewegen/the strength of the words…” – encouraged us to concerted discussion about sometimes difficult, but always common problems. – Good literature teaches among other things independent thinking and forming our own opinion. Literature makes an intercultural dialogue possible, because good book widens horizons – claimed Rolf Nikel. He also emphasized the role of translators not only in the field of a literary flow of ideas and contents. Rolf Nikel wished all participants of the WBF wise authors, translators and publishers. He said the concerted dialogue between Poland and Germany was needed for contemporary Europe more than ever.
During the opening ceremony it was given the Honorary Award of the Warsaw Book Fair IKAR. The winner was Hanna Krall, awarded for „an ability to find the secrets of human destiny”. The author of „Shielding the Flame” spoke the traditional formula: „The Warsaw Book Fair is opened”. The honorary strip’s cut was made by the minister Magdalena Gawin, the ambasador Rolf Nikel and Juergen Boss, the director of the Frankfurt Book Fair.
Traditionally first days of WBF include many events directed to the practitioners of the publishing market. We knew also authors and titles of fictional, essayistic and poetic books, nominated to the leading Polish literary awards: The NIKE Award, The Literary Award Gdynia, The Gryfia Award (for the best woman writer), Award of the Polish Society of Book Publishers and The Magellan Award for the best books about travelling.
The 1st day of the WBF included many international events – an arrangement about a partnership between the Warsaw Book Fair and The International Book Fair in Moscow was held, business participants had an opportunity to know some recent information about the Chinese publishing market.
One of the most important today’s events was undoubtedly meeting with Herta Müller, German Nobel prizewinner in literature.
